Rahul was staying in Mumbai with his family and doing work from home. One day his friend Mukul came and stayed at his house. As a formality, Mukul asked, “‘So Rahul, what is your schedule?” Rahul replied, “I do exercise, I do work, I do some meditation, and I rest for three hours in the afternoon.”
Mukul was surprised, “Three hours in the afternoon? You sleep three hours in the afternoon?”
Rahul replied, “No, no, no – my wife sleeps.”
Narad Bhakti Sutra No. 62
Na tad-asiddhau loka-vyavahāro heyaḥ kintu phala-tyāgas tat-sādhanaṁ ca kāryam eva
(Until bhakti is developed completely, one must continue social customs. Just, the fruit of all activities is to be surrendered to the Lord.)
Our mind has become biased. Sanyas and brahmacharya became spirituality and everything else became non-spiritual. This sutra breaks that.
Bhakti needs to be in society. When you are excited for your job, or when you want to do something great, or when you remember “I am nothing,” that is all spirituality. Let your enlightenment go everywhere in your life.
Bluma Zeigarnik, a cognitive psychologist, discovered that the mind is biased to unfinished tasks. This anxiety of incompletion is the enemy of our creativity and intelligence, because the subconscious mind stays occupied with our plans and pending results.
This is what Narad is saying. “Just the fruit of all activities are to be surrendered to the Lord.” Make a temple and put every result there. If we want to be intelligent, we have to put all our plans at the feet of our Guru or Bhagwan. Then our subconscious mind can relax. Do this exercise for seven days. Whatever plan or target you have, write it and put it at the feet of the Lord. Let your mind do something bigger, let your intelligence grow.
LIVE Q&A
Que: Baba, when we sit still, you say our energy rises by itself. But if everything is pulled down by gravity, how does the energy go up? Ans: Everything cannot be pulled by gravity, beloved. That’s what Jesus is saying, the kingdom of God is not in entropy, where energy is always getting lesser. Everything is falling and decaying, except freedom, the kingdom of God.
Everything is falling, but look at a flame. Have you ever seen a flame going down? Your consciousness and energy go up.
Your breathing is helping the mitochondria to build energy. The magnetic field of our mitochondria is ready to uplift and go to the crown, but our thoughts, mind and desires keep our energy involved.
So in the Ojasvi Bhav! meditation, sit silently and breathe deeply. You are burning that veerya. With breathing, stillness and focus on the crown chakra, it is enough to uplift your energy.
Zen Koan
Chance came and sat at the feet of Master Empty and asked, “Beloved Master, I am reading The Gateless Gate, and in case 38 Master Wuzu Fayan said: ‘It is like a water buffalo passing through a latticed window. Its head, horns and four legs have all passed through. Why cannot its tail pass through?’ Beloved Master, how is it possible? Why cannot the tail pass through?”
Master Empty smiled and replied, “Where is the tail of the buffalo?”
Chance was shocked, “What, Master?”
Empty said, “Let me explain more easily. Where is the tail of your mind? Tell me, Chance, where is the edge of your mind?”
Chance remained silent.
Then Empty told: “Paltu deewar kahkaha, mat ko jhaankan jaaye. Piya ko khojan main chali, aapui gayi haraaye.“
“Paltu says: there is a wall of laughter. Do not go to peep over it. Whoever looks at what is behind that wall, he laughs and jumps and never comes back.”
Whoever knows where the tail of the buffalo is, vanished.
Zen Haiku
When the self is understood, separation from the self arose.
When the separation from the self arises, liberation from the self occurred.
And when liberation from the self occurs, the self vanished.
