Zen Inquiry Retreat: Journey into Self Inquiry

Zen Inquiry Retreat by Utsav Sangha

Happening: February  4 – 8, 2026
Location: Sri Anantha Niketan Ashram, Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu

What is Zen Inquiry retreat?

This retreat invites you to meet yourself with raw honesty through one question called: “Koan” It is the most profound technique in Zen, where you see the person facing you as a mirror and speak the koan to one another in a live inquiry. This simple yet powerful method cuts through surface stories and opens the door to inner clarity, quiet intelligence, and higher awareness.

Koan

A question with no fixed answer, a mirror turning speech into revelation. Zen Master Da Hui used it to shatter reliance on intellect; we use the same tool here, only asking : “Who is in?” Spoken aloud, the words let unconscious material surface. Felt in the body, voiced in real time, truth cuts free of philosophy. There is no “right” answer, only the sincerity of what arises. Let it be seen, and freedom follows. As we say, “See and be free.”

Why choose Zen Inquiry now?

Because a lifetime of conditioning, roles, labels, habits, and masks has layered itself over our natural clarity. Thought patterns loop, identities harden, habitual behaviours, and we forget the simple mystery of being. A koan cuts through all that at once. It cannot be solved;  It never demands explanation, it demands sight. It asks you to see, not to explain. When seeing happens, overthinking loosens, masks fall away, and an inner quiet rises.

Daily schedule

  • Morning — Breath-work, quiet breakfast, first koan session

  • Midday — Second koan session, silent lunch with rest time, third koan session

  • Evening — Silent walk, dinner in quiet community, final koan session, lights out

Arrival 4 Feb for orientation · Silence from dawn 6 Feb until the closing-day kirtan on 8 Feb.

The beauty of Sri Anantha Niketan

Our retreat takes a place in Sri Anantha Niketan Ashram, resting in the green jungle below sacred Arunachala. The ashram is cared for by Gopi ji and Amma, whose warmth and devotion make it feel like home. Eco-friendly rooms and shaded paths give you quiet for inner work. Gopi ji & Amma’s team cooks fresh vegetarian meals with love, and herbal chai and filtered water are always available. Most afternoons, we walk to a nearby lake, watching the sun turn the sky gold before we return to the calm of evening.
